A glimpse from the past…
The idea of establishing a College of Law in the University of Cebu was hatched five(5) years ago. Even before that UC President, Atty. Augusto W. Go, already received suggestions to put up a law school.
But it was only in 2001 that retired Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Regino Hermosisima Jr., presently the Chairman of the UC Board of Trustees, started moving in earnest towards the realizations of the idea. Through his initiative, breakfast and luncheon meetings were held among President Go, Chairman Hermosisima Jr., and Dean Adelino B. Sitoy to put everything into motion. Thus, the assistance of Dr. Alicia J. Tan, Vice-President for Academic Affairs was solicited to comply with administrative and other requirements.
President Go’s decision to establish the law school jibed with his construction of a seven-story building on a 6000.00-per meter lot at Banilad, Cebu City, across the Gaisano Country Mall. In effect, President Go engaged himself in two gigantic undertakings: 1) erecting a new building for the University of Cebu; and 2) establishing a College of Law to be housed in the new building.
As soon as the second and third floors of the Banilad building were complete, the UC law library was immediately put up. It presently houses three (3) sets of Philippine reports and Supreme Court Reports Annotated provided by: 1) defunct law office of the former Chairman of the UC Board of Trustees, the late Regino Hermosisima, Sr.; 2) the private collection of the present UC Chairman of the Board of Trustees, retired Supreme Court Justice Hermosisima, Jr; and 3) the direct purchases of law books by the University of Cebu itself.
Inspection by the CHED authorities soon followed on March 8, 2002.
On March 8, 2002 the Commission on Higher Education issued the necessary permit for the UC law school to open in School Year 2002-2003.
